DC MOTOR
ENGR 10100: Engineering Design I
Fall 2019
Objective
The purpose of this project was to design and fabricate a functioning DC motor. And test the motor's operating conditions using an external power source.
Technical Description
The motor was constructed using various materials like wood, steel, and copper. The components of the motor were mounted on a wooden board. The wiring of the motor was connected by soldering. Armature coils were constructed using 2x bolt, 4x washer, and copper wire which were tightly wound in between the bolt and two washers. The armature coils are attached to a wooden block fabricated using a bandsaw, belt sander, and drill. Armature assembly is held suspended with the use of a metal rod and steel brackets fabricated with the use of vises, hammer, clamp, and power drill. The commutator plate is constructed with copper film, while the brushes are steel. Like the armature, the stators were constructed with bolt, washer, and copper wire. The design's schematic and the completed model are shown below.
Results / Outcome
The design fulfilled its purpose the motor was able to operate at a maximum voltage of 50V prior to failure.
