CONSTRUCTION OF AN AILERON
Objective
The purpose of this project was to fabricate an aileron of an aircraft based on design schematic. Aileron is a flight control located on the trailing edge of each wing which is responsible for controlling roll which is rotation around the longitudinal axis. Once the aileron was constructed the second of this project was to do a repair of the damages on the structure which were added by the instructor after the complete fabrication of the model.
Technical Description
The model was constructed entirely out of aluminum 2024 with the exception of the hinges which were made out of steel. Aileron skin was riveted to the spar and the ribs using 2017-T4 rivets. The flush and surface patch for the repairs were made out of the same material as the aileron. The repairs were made with compliance to industry standards.
Result
The project served its purpose in demonstrating how an aircraft aileron is constructed. The airfoil structure was successfully manufactured with use of the design schematics. The repairs made on the skin structure was also successful in repairing the damages.
